Some Suggestions
During the past three months I have learned a tremendous amount about sewing. These are the basic principals that I have learned (some from my mother in-law, and some by personal experience: Always wash your fabric first thing, no matter how excited you are!
Before you wash, cut edges of fabric with a pinking shears (it will help cut back on fringe).
Iron, iron, iron, before, during, during, during, and after. Ironing helps sooooo much. Not only does it make it easier to sew, it helps to keep your project neat. Always have a seam ripper handy. In fact, I would suggest buying a seam ripper before a sewing machine. It is by far the most important tool you will ever own! If you come across a problem spot or get really frustrated, take a break. Get a snack or make a phone call, etc. I’ve found so many times that when I take a break, and come back; I’m not nearly as frustrated as I was.
Be confident in your project. I know it might sound corny, but it really makes a difference. I think for so long I’ve put myself in a box with certain expectations, and that box has really been a waste. The sky is the limit, really; so don’t put yourself in a box. Get inspired. Look at other people’s projects, in magazines, and books. There are so many cute ideas out there. Often times it helps to look at other people’s projects to get started. There's nothing wrong with a little inspiration. I Basically, that’s what I’ve learned, and I just wanted to share it with you.

I read this entry with a smile and nodding my head in agreement. You put into words what I would have said myself. It was only recently that I purchased the 'deluxe' seam ripper. ha - I laughed as I did. My inner comments said something like 'if I am going to be ripping, it better be comfortable'.
I just found your blog through your mum-in-laws blog and just wanted to say that I am enjoying reading it.
These are some great tips! Like Kate, I was nodding my head in agreement too:)
